History of Noventa

The city was fonde during the V century a.C. . At those times there was a lagoon extended below San Donà di Piave and the pre-lagoon territory was covered by a thick forest devoted to the God Fetonte (son of the Sun, according to the myth). Nowadays only a small part of that forest is left, in the area of Cessalto, the Fetontea Forest.

The first inhabitants were the "Opitergini" coming from the near city of Oderzo (Opitegium), which was, with Altino, the most important center for the Venetians, mostly due to the commercial prestige and for the sale of quality horses.

So the zone was inhabited for centuries before the arrival of the Roman legions. Noventa was just halfway form the main centres and was rich in fish and wood.

From the territory of Noventa also started the navigability of the river Piave.

City's name and bearings

Noventa di Piave is a composed name. the etymology of the first part of the place name is still unknown, with many hypothesis given by studious. The most reliable would give to Noventa the meaning of "new" or "rebuilt". The meaning of the second part (di Piave) is clear, being determined by the need of distinguish the city from others namesakes: Noventa Padovana, Noventa Vicentina.

From the heraldic point of view, the municipal bearings is given by "golden shield, black horse, lively on the left, laid upon a band wavy in light blue, and seven silver balls on a light blue field on the right corner".

The symbology is clear, referring to the horse trade, once thriving, reminding the river Piave with the wavy band and those villages belonging to the city territory with the seven balls.
